The 2019 Monte Bello, tasted from barrel, is insanely beautiful. Vibrant, deep and pulsing with energy, the 2019 simply has it all. How will it turn out in bottle? I can’t say just yet. But this barrel sample shipped across the country is positively dazzling, so the wine’s potential is clear. The 2019 offers superb fruit density, with mid-weight structure, bright acids and plenty of tannin. It could very well turn out to be epic.

A unique chardonnay with sliced cooked peach, dried pineapple, lemon curd and vanilla. Some nougat, too. It's full-bodied and layered with a creamy texture. Flavorful and spicy finish. Chalky at the end, with a white-pepper undertone. Drink now or hold.

The 2019 Monte Bello includes 9% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. It has a poised, graceful nose of fresh sage and lilac with savory, meaty aromas in the background. The palate is medium-bodied but with admirable stuffing and concentration, leading to a springboard finish of pencil lead, gravel and pleasing, refreshing acidity. The standard élevage in new American oak is still years away from fully integrating, as evidenced in the herbal, upright but pleasant posture of the finish. This is a confidently elegant, high-toned iteration of this iconic wine that should drink and develop beautifully over the next three decades.

Über Ridge Vineyards
Im Jahr 1886, hoch in den Santa Cruz Bergen, wurden die ersten Monte Bello Weinberge gepflanzt, und der Bau der Weinkellerei begann. Ein erster Jahrgang der jungen Reben folgte 1892. Während der Prohibition (1920-1933) blieb der Weinberg nicht vollständig erhalten. Einige Reben überlebten bis in die späten 1930er Jahre, aber in den 1940er Jahren wurden sie effektiv aufgegeben. Acht Hektar Cabernet Sauvignon wurden 1949 neu bepflanzt. Dies war die Quelle des ersten Ridge Monte Bello (1962) und der nachfolgenden Jahrgänge bis 1974, als in den 1960er Jahren neu gepflanzte Blöcke für die Aufnahme in Betracht gezogen wurden. Seitdem wurden die historischen Weinberge auf dem Grat nach und nach neu bepflanzt.
