Aromas of cassis, black cherries, licorice, dried tobacco and wet earth. Some leafy character, too. Medium-bodied with chewy tannins and vibrant, juicy fruit character. Firm and compact with hints of crushed stones in the finish. A little timid at the end. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 6% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.

Offering up aromas of cassis, plums, pencil lead and licorice, the 2019 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish with a very civilized expression of Moulis-typical grip. Forget it for a decade and follow it for the next two.

The 2019 Chasse-Spleen is tight-fisted on the nose despite leaving my sample three or four hours to open. But I do appreciate the fruit profile: blackberry, wild strawberry, cedar and light tobacco scents almost reluctantly unfurling. The palate looks promising, classic in style, not reserved but not wanting to show off at this early stage. Fresh from the start, the acidity is well judged and it has an appealing grainy texture. It is detailed with touches of graphite lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.

Ein bekannter Name im Dienst einer großen Lage, die den Ruf des Médoc mitbestimmt! Die Weinfelder von Château Chasse-Spleen erstrecken sich über 75ha in Süd- und Ostlage auf der kiesigen Kuppe von Grand Poujeaux; sie sind nur mit edlen Rebsorten bepflanzt. Dieses Anwesen, auf dem schon im 12. Jhrht. Wein angebaut wurde, entstand 1822 durch Erbteilung der Familie Gressier. Es heißt, daß Charles Baudelaire, der diesem Wein besonders zugetan war, dem Gut seinen Namen verliehen habe (chasse spleen = verjagt schlechte Laune). Zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts gehörte Château Chasse-Spleen dem Bremer Weinhändler Segnitz, der aber 1914 enteignet wurde. 1922 kaufte Herr Lahary das Gut. Schon seit 1860 ist es ein Cru Bourgeois mit dem Prädikat exceptionnel. Seit 1976 steht der Betrieb unter der Leitung der jetzigen Besitzer, die alles daran setzen, um ihn auf Spitzenniveau zu halten. Der Wein ist harmonisch, kräftig, mit viel Tannin und einem kräftigen Bukett voller Eleganz. Er hält was sein Name verspricht!
