Tasting the first of many 2019 Bordeaux wines in my home office. The first samples are starting to roll in. I cannot wait to dig into this new vintage! I am ready Bordeaux for more. Bring on the samples!!! 2019 Croix de Labrie, the first of many 2019 Bordeaux to be tasted. 2019 Croix de Labrie - Inky dark purple in color, you know this is intense from the moment the wine hits your glass. Chocolate, vanilla, blackberry, blueberry, smoke, flowers, licorice, and raspberry notes take no effort to find. There is good lift, loads of crushed rocks, opulent, velvety textures, and layer after layer of chocolate-covered black cherries. This could be the best wine yet from Croix de Labrie! The wine is a blend of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% alcohol.

Composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon with a potential of 14.5% alcohol and aging in 100% new French oak barrels, the 2019 Croix de Labrie has a very deep purple-black color. The nose opens with some very classy cedary notes, giving way to a profound core of baked plums, blackberry preserves and blueberry pie with touches of licorice, chargrilled meats, mocha and eucalyptus with a waft of red roses. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the palate has wonderful vibrancy for its weight, with a solid backbone of plush, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant. This chateau has been on a roll recently—I am more and more impressed every year.

Fabulous aromas of blackberries, blueberries, pine needles and spices, such as nutmeg and allspice. White pepper, too. Full-bodied and very tight with a solid core of fruit and ultra-fine yet powerful tannins. It’s got so much energy and drive. Vibrant at every level. Precise and not overpowering, yet so structured. 97% merlot and 3% cabernet sauvignon. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. This needs time to soften. Try after 2026.

Das Château Croix de Labrie befindet sich in Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, das unweigerlich an Burgund und sein Mosaik aus Grundstücken und Produzenten erinnert. In der Tat umfassen die Weinberge rund 10 Hektar im Herzen der Appellation. Besonderes Augenmerk wird auf die Reben gelegt, um das Maximum des Terroirs auszudrücken. Die Weinberge werden als kleiner Diamant behandelt, vom Beschneiden über die Ernte bis hin zur Weinbereitung und Reifung. Die Grundstücke befinden sich in Badon (in der Nähe von Pavie), St. Sulpice (neben dem ersten Grundstück von Valandraud) und Saint Christophe des Bardes auf dem berühmten Plateau mit Kalkstein-Adern neben dem Keller des Chateau (aus dem Jahr 1687). Das Terroir von Badon besteht aus Sand, Ton und Kalkstein. Bodenentwässerung bringt Finesse. Die St. Sulpice-Zusammensetzung ist vornehmlich aus Ton, die mehr Tiefe und Dichte verursacht. Und schließlich das Plateau Saint Christophe des Bardes auf Kalksteinboden mit Tonarterien, das Komplexität und Dichte bringt. Die Reben sind mehr als 90% Merlot, mit ein paar Reihen Cabernet Sauvignon und Cabernet Franc.
