Vinous
Ripely aromatic, juicy, tart-edged apple and purple plum are strikingly and darkly tinged with what I can at best, if very imperfectly, describe as an ore-like as well as stony and subtly smoky sense of mineral matter. There is a palpable sense of extract richness on display here that I missed in the corresponding Scharzhofberger, as well as an enhanced impression of body reflecting a couple of degrees higher must weight (barely lower, in fact, than that at which Braune Kupp Spätlese was picked a week earlier). This Riesling’s layering of fruit and mineral is reflected in a long, resonant finish to which piquant suggestions of plum pit and toasted almond add further allure. Reviewed by David Schildknecht
