David Cilli, Winemaker of Promontory
Just after fermentation, the 2018 vintage of Promontory already reflected the gentle, extended growing season, showing uncommonly detailed tannins. During its many months in the cellar, the wine has retained its effusive brightness and fresh acidity while continuing to acquire elevated nuance and bringing forward its many facets. Blue-fruit aromas, as well as pleasantly resinous qualities, accompany a fresh, cool note that rises to greet the nose. The wine’s lifted and profound dimension emanate outward from a center of almost ethereal form. Although the fine-grained tannins introduce an element of restraint to this translucent radiancy, the intrinsic nobility of this wine persists at each stage of its measured procession across the palate to the finish.

Violets and blueberries with cloves and pine cones, following through to a medium to full body with tight, seamless tannins, like finely cut diamonds. It’s very closed and reserved at the end. Weightless. Needs plenty of time to open. Unique wine. Better after 2027.

The 2018 Promontory was tasted as a barrel sample. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal a vibrant black fruit core of ripe plums, boysenberries and black currants with hints of crushed rocks, bay leaves, lavender, olives and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate features firm, exquisitely fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, beautifully framing the intense, crunchy black fruits, finishing long and minerally.

In den frühen 1980er Jahren entdeckte H. William Harlan beim Wandern entlang des südwestlichen Kamms von Oakville ein abgelegenes Gebiet. Die verborgene Weite - uralt und ungezähmt - bewegte ihn tief, blieb aber schwer fassbar, bis die Familie Harlan sie 2008 endgültig eroberte. Als die zweite Generation das Land erkundete, begannen sie, eigene Entdeckungen zu machen. Im Kern dieses wilden Geländes fanden sie eine starke geologische Konvergenz, die die steile, raue Topographie geprägt und die Voraussetzungen für eine insgesamt exotische Weinbauumgebung geschaffen hatte. Mit der Zeit stellten sie fest, dass die dramatische Landschaft - gleich hinter dem Rand des Bekannten - sie langsam verändern und letztendlich für ein neues Unterfangen inspirieren würde: Promontory.
