Made with mostly Sangiovese supplemented by the structural heft and texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (that makes up roughly 20% of the blend), this is a profound and important red wine from Tuscany. The Mazzei 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is your proverbial steak buddy, or all-round meat wine, with abundant black fruit, spice, tannins and acidity to cut through the fat and the gristle. By a hair, I prefer the depth and intensity of the 2019 vintage compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at this same sitting. This wine is slightly more etched and angular, making it a good bet for extra bottle aging.

This is savoury, dry in the best possible way, with a ton of red fruits, dried roses and herbs, and waves of fragrance. It's a successful blend where the Sangiovese is dominant, conferring the wine with its warm personality but the Cabernet Sauvingon adds a touch of austerity to the tannins and a sense of quiet confidence. Turmeric and olive tapenade as it opens, alongside raspberry, red cherry and smoky oak, the whole thing both extremely delicate and intensely fragrant. Can drink now with a short carafe - there are tannins but they are well defined and finely layered - but it will also age. Small amounts of the 2018 were released last winter, but this September sees the first proper release thought the Place de Bordeaux. Ageing 18 month in small French oak barrels, 70% new, plus four month in concrete tanks afterwards. One to look out for - great stuff from the Mazzei family, that has been making wine in Tuscany since the 15th century.

In Fonterutoli befindet sich ein einzigartiger, steiniger Boden, der durch den natürlichen Zerfall des typischen Kalk- und Sandsteins aus uralten Sedimentschichten entstanden ist. Die Mazzei schafften es in jahrhundertelanger Arbeit aus diesem felsigen, trockenen Grund eine edle Lage werden zu lassen, in der die Vielfalt heute ein Leitmotiv ist. Die Weinbergs-Flächen sind in fünf Zonen gegliedert, deren Höhe von 220 bis hinauf zu 550 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel reicht; insgesamt werden 120 einzelne Parzellen bewirtschaftet. Sie sind harmonisch eingebettet in andere Pflanzungen, Felder und den eigenen Wald, in dem eine vielfältige Fauna aus Wildtieren lebt. Alle Trauben werden von Hand geerntet; der Ertrag jeder einzelnen Parzelle wird separat gekeltert und in Holzfässern gereift. So zeigt sich am Ende die Vielfalt an Aromen und der im großen Reichtum an charakteristischen Geschmacksnoten.
